A new approach to innovation at scale
Around the world, many of the most impactful innovations have emerged from coordinated programmes rather than isolated projects. From digital technologies to advances in healthcare, breakthroughs often depend on collaboration across disciplines, sectors and borders. To meet today’s complex challenges, there is a growing need to design initiatives that can mobilise expertise, align actors and sustain long-term efforts. One such approach is the development of challenge-driven programmes, where multiple teams work in parallel to explore different solutions to a clearly defined problem.
From idea to impact
The Big if True Science Accelerator brings together participants from diverse backgrounds to explore how ambitious ideas can be transformed into concrete, scalable innovation initiatives. Through a structured mentoring process, participants develop proposals that are designed not only to address complex challenges, but also to attract funding and move towards implementation. They are supported by experienced programme leaders and international experts, and engage with a global network of peers working on similar challenges. Applications are now open for the next round, with Vinnova collaborating closely with the German innovation agency SPRIND. The programme is delivered by Renaissance Philanthropy.
Who it is for
The programme is intended for researchers and professionals with strong technical expertise who want to contribute beyond individual projects. It is particularly relevant for those working at the intersection of research, policy and innovation, and who are interested in developing initiatives with long-term societal impact.
What you will gain
As a participant, you will:
Turn an idea into a concrete proposal for a large-scale innovation initiative.
Receive guidance from experienced programme leaders and international experts.
Engage with peers from around the world working on complex societal challenges.
Present your proposal to actors who can support implementation and attract funding.
The programme runs over four months (July–November) and requires an expected commitment of around 10 hours per week. Up to ten participants from across the globe are selected, and in November they present their proposals to organisations that can support further development and implementation. Previous participants have developed initiatives in areas such as health and biotechnology.
Part of a deepened collaboration between Sweden and Germany
Through participation in the programme, Vinnova strengthens its collaboration with the German innovation agency SPRIND. This partnership forms part of a broader effort to develop new methods for driving breakthrough innovation and accelerating impact across borders.
